“Filial Piety Moves Heaven”
Shun plowed the fields on Mount Li,
With elephants and birds aiding him,
His filial piety moved heaven.
Expanded Story:
Shun, an ancient Chinese sage-king, endured a difficult childhood and youth. His mother passed away early, and his father, Gusou, remarried. Shun’s stepmother and half-brother, Xiang, treated him cruelly, often abusing him and even attempting to kill him on multiple occasions. Once, Gusou asked Shun to repair the roof of a granary but set fire to it from below, hoping to burn him alive. Shun cleverly used two bamboo hats as makeshift wings and jumped to safety. Another time, Gusou ordered Shun to dig a well, but as Shun worked, his father and brother filled the well with soil, intending to bury him alive. Shun, however, had prepared a side tunnel and escaped.
Despite such mistreatment, Shun never harbored resentment. Instead, he remained filial to his parents and kind to his brother. His virtue moved heaven and earth, and even elephants came to help him plow the fields, while birds assisted in weeding. Emperor Yao, hearing of Shun’s filial piety and wisdom, decided to test him. Yao married his two daughters to Shun and observed how he managed his household. Shun’s benevolence and wisdom impressed Yao, who eventually abdicated the throne to him. Shun became a great ruler, governing with filial piety and bringing peace and prosperity to the land.
