Emperor Wen of Han, Liu Heng, was a wise and benevolent ruler of the Western Han Dynasty. When his mother, Empress Dowager Bo, fell ill, Emperor Wen personally attended to her day and night. Before serving her medicine, he would taste it himself to ensure it was neither too hot nor toxic. This went on for three years, during which he never neglected his duties, even refusing to sleep deeply for fear of not being there when his mother needed him. His filial devotion moved the entire nation and became a model for future generations.
